Chapter Nine

I Came, I Saw, I Conquered

Just as they had expected, Elisea was on high alert.

The night patrols on the shore were double from when the two of them had made their way inland with Dorian’s squad.

They were everywhere. Guards patrolled all sides of the property, brandishing rifles and shining their flashlights in every crack and crevice. It had gone from a skeleton crew to a full unit overnight. Lena knew the duo were coming for her, and all this added manpower meant only one thing: she was scared.

Killian and Anise were at the base of the hill, ducked behind the chain-link fence that closed off the yard from the forest behind them.

“That’s a lot of personnel,” Anise said with an unsure look.

“She’s expecting us,” Killian answered.

“How are we possibly going to get past them?” she asked.

He scanned the scene, evaluating what was at their disposal. He noticed a junction box off to the side closest to them; no doubt it was connected to the main power unit.

“Listen up,” he said. “I’m going to distract them, then you’ll climb over and shut off the power at that junction box.” He pointed to it.

“Distract them how?”

“Like this.” He grabbed a fallen tree limb and positioned it in his right hand above his shoulder like a javelin. With a clean heft, he threw it over the fence as it soared through the air and smashed into the window of a parked semi halfway across the yard.

Every guard suddenly diverted their attention to the source of the sound as they rushed over to investigate.

Anise quickly scaled the fence, flipped open the junction box, and flicked every switch to the opposite position. The lights flickered out, leaving everything and everyone in pitch-black darkness. The only light remaining came from the guards’ flashlights, which were now flashing all over the place with noticeable panic.

“They’re here! Weapons ready!” yelled one of the guards.

“This way. Now!” Killian whispered as he motioned her along.

They made their way to the on-site mobile office quickly and quietly. The darkness gave them cover, but it was no easier for them to see than it was for the guards.

Killian opened the door slowly so as not to alert the patrols with a creak. They entered the office, which was lit by a small lamp on the desk.

Killian felt the hairs on his neck stand on end. He turned to see a man brandishing a small knife lunge at him. Killian caught the man by his hand, disarming him and throwing him to the floor, crashing into the nearby table.

“Taylor,” Anise said with a scowl.

“I knew you two would show back up here,” Taylor snarled.

Killian stared at the man with a continuous glare, not breaking it for even a moment. “Watch the door,” he said to Anise.

Killian stepped closer to the fragile man.

“Stay back!” Taylor grabbed a butter knife off the table above him as he inched across the floor. “I’m warning y—”

Killian launched the utensil out of Taylor’s hand with a kick,
